“My Cousin Vinny” dithers for a while, for after setting up its situation, nobody’s quite sure where it’s going, and poor Pesci has to carry it on pure slapstick shtick. He slips, he slides, he eats grits. Is this funny? It depends on your Pesci threshold mine is high) and your slapstick threshold (mine’s low)..

Whales and dolphins can become stranded in great numbers, sometimes in hundreds or even thousands. Up to 600 are stranded on British shores each year and we still aren’t sure why. Bad weather may confuse the animals’ sense of direction, sending them into dangerously shallow waters but other evidence blames human activity..

But now, in this environment especially, universities must be at the forefront of defending the rights of all students and faculty to listen to controversial voices, to engage disagreeable viewpoints, and to make every effort to demonstrate our commitment to the sort of fearless and spirited debate that we are simultaneously asking of the larger society. Anyone with a voice can shout over a speaker; but being able to listen to and then effectively rebut those with whom we disagree particularly those who themselves peddle intolerance is one of the greatest skills our education can bestow. As an undergraduate at Yale I was inspired, as so many Americans have been over five decades, by John F. Kennedy call to serve in the Peace Corps. JFK had an ambitious vision to place 100,000 volunteers overseas every year. I play that conversation out in my head sometimes, not quite sure which direction it could go. But will she want to know about him? and if yes, i always wonder how much to tell.

Hellman’s legacy may have waned after her death in 1984, but the book, “A Difficult Woman: The Challenging Life and Times of Lillian Hellman” (Bloomsbury Press), makes it clear how complicated she was. “She’s a memoirist who admits to having a poor memory, a feminist who never identified herself as a feminist, a Jew who is accused of being anti Semitic,” says Kessler Harris. “Her personality is, at once, nurturing, loving and funny, as well as rude, dismissive and self aggrandizing.”.
